Promised infrastructure investments, timelines needed in federal budget: CCA

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) has raised concerns over infrastructure investment in Federal Budget 2018.

“Canada’s aging infrastructure combined with the need to keep pace with Canada’s growth require the promised funding and timelines by the government,” said Mary Van Buren, CCA president. “This stimulus funding creates jobs in local communities while improving the overall quality of life of residents.”

Programs that supply robust financial support to those in the STEM industries and employers that provide apprenticeship training should also be included in the budget, according to CCA.

The association said it supports the federal government’s recognition of the construction industry’s skilled labour shortage, as well as its investment in post-secondary institutions and technology-forward training.

’The new apprenticeship programs for underrepresented groups, including women, Indigenous people, people with disabilities and visible minorities, are positive,” said Van Buren. “The construction industry is trying to bring new workers to the industry. We look forward to working with the government on initiatives that would move the needle in the right direction.”
